We are currently witnessing Americans from all walks of life come together to demand change. Internationally, artists are contributing to the conversation through their work. Recent examples include songs written by DaBaby and Lil Baby that were dubbed by the LA Times as “protest music for the masses”, or Anderson .Paak’s latest release, Lockdown.
Throughout history, art has been used as a platform for highlighting injustices and promoting activism. From protest ballads to politically-charged paintings, art has always had the power to create change.
Here are some of our favorite examples.
PABLO PICASSO- GUERNICA
Guernica, painted by Picasso in 1937, is “regarded by many art critics as one of the most moving and powerful anti-war paintings in history.” * Picasso painted this work in response to the fascist bombing of the town Guernica in northern Spain. The piece was shown internationally and is credited with raising awareness of the Spanish Civil War.
BILLIE HOLIDAY- STRANGE FRUIT
Strange Fruit is a protest song recorded by Billie Holiday to protest the lynchings of African Americans occurring in the United States during the 1930’s. It’s an unfortunate truth that Holiday’s Strange Fruit remains relevant today, as we continue struggling with racism and violence.
SPIKE LEE- DO THE RIGHT THING
Dedicated to victims of police violence, Do the Right Thing explores the racial tensions of a changing neighborhood. Not only was it a commercial success, it received multiple Academy award nominations, and is often listed as one of the greatest films of all time. It’s hard to reckon with how little has changed since it’s 1989 release, and as we see racial tensions once again exploding throughout the country, we think this film deserves another watch.
